Neelkanth Mishra becomes ED in World Bank
Neelkanth Mishra, one of India’s leading economists, has been appointed Executive Director of the World Bank. The central government has decided to send him to this important post for a tenure of three years. He will represent India at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC. Mishra, who has a deep understanding of market strategy, economic policies and global financial matters, has been appointed at a time when the need for financial resources and investment for developing countries is continuously increasing. He will replace former IAS officer Parameswaran Iyer on this post. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his name.
Who is Neelkanth Mishra?
Neelkanth Mishra is counted among the most popular economists and market experts of the country. He is currently associated with Axis Bank Group and is holding the responsibility of Global Research Head and Whole Time Director at Axis Capital. Apart from this, he is also a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM).
Education and career
Neelkanth Mishra completed his schooling from Delhi Public School, Bokaro Steel City. After this he obtained B.Tech degree in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur. He started his career as a system manager in Hindustan Lever. Later he made his mark in the field of financial and economic research. Before Axis Group, he was associated with Credit Suisse for nearly two decades. Here he worked as a strategist for the Asia Pacific region and distinguished himself among global investors.
What will be the role in the World Bank?
Neelkanth Mishra will represent India in the World Bank as Executive Director. The World Bank is one of the world’s largest development finance institutions, providing financial assistance to projects related to infrastructure, education, health, poverty alleviation and economic development.
His appointment comes at a time when developing countries are demanding more financial assistance for climate change, infrastructure and economic development projects. In such a situation, Mishra’s economic expertise can play an important role in keeping India’s interests strong on the global stage.
