Journey from Bihar to British Cabinet
Kanishk Narayan was born in November 1989 in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. His family later moved to Delhi and settled in the city of Cardiff, Wales when Kanishk was 12 years old. Narayan has told many times that after coming to Britain, his parents had to face financial crisis. He worked in low paying and night shift jobs. Narayan says that it was only after seeing the struggles of his parents that he understood the importance of opportunities in society.
After studying at a government school in Cardiff, he attended Britain’s famous Eton College on a scholarship. After this he took a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford University. He has also done MBA from Stanford University, America.

Before entering politics, Narayan worked in sectors like finance, venture capital and public policy. He worked at Lazard, a large investment firm, where he advised companies, governments and tech entrepreneurs in Europe and America. His main focus was on areas like AI, Fintech and Climate Technology. Later, he also worked with tech startups in collaboration with investment firms like ‘Atomico’ and ‘Clocktower Ventures’. He has also been an economic expert and senior advisor in the British government, where he worked with ministers and the Prime Minister’s Office. He also had a role in creating Britain’s 25-year environmental plan.
Political stature increased rapidly
Narayan became an MP in the 2024 British general election by winning the ‘Vale of Glamorgan’ seat in Wales on the Labor Party ticket. With this he also became the first minority MP elected from Wales. In September 2025, he got the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary for AI and Online Security. During this time, he played a key role in announcing millions of pounds of investment in the AI and semiconductor sector.
These include a £400 million plan to buy AI chips from British companies and a £250 million investment to increase cloud computing capacity in the country. He will also monitor the functioning of Britain’s ‘AI Safety Institute’. The main work of this institute is to assess the security of cutting-edge AI models and the risks associated with them.

Kanishk Narayan considers AI as one of the biggest transformative technologies in human history. He has said, “AI will probably be the most decisive technology in human history. Its impact will be greater than many other technological changes.” However, he also acknowledges that there are concerns about its impact on jobs and society.

Kanishk Narayan met India’s Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and discussed cooperation in AI and other emerging technologies. Praising India’s tech sector, Narayan had described Bengaluru as ‘the heartbeat of the world’s tech ecosystem’.
