The storm is named after the famous Ba Vi mountain range and Ba Vi National Park in northern Vietnam.
Storm Bavi is wreaking havoc. First it affected Japan and Taiwan, then it is wreaking havoc in Eastern China and the Philippines. After the earthquake in eastern China’s coastal city Taizhou, 2 million people were evacuated to safe places. Not only this, relief work was also done in Zhejiang province, Beijing and Shanghai and lakhs of people were saved. There have been more than a dozen deaths in the Philippines. Vietnam has given the name Bavi to the storm.
Hurricane Bavi is part of the naming system for cyclones that form in the western North Pacific Ocean, where countries take turns suggesting names and the names of upcoming storms are decided in advance.
What is the meaning of Bavi in Hindi?
In India and countries around the world, the name Bavi is taken together, but in Vietnam, which has given this name, its pronunciation is slightly different. In the pronunciation here, Ba and Vi are not read together. It is named after the famous Ba Vi mountain range and Ba Vi National Park in northern Vietnam. It means “three peaks” or “three seats/thrones”.
Ba Wei mountain range.
Like many other storms in the western Pacific Ocean, its name was chosen from a list created by the member countries of the World Meteorological Organization’s Typhoon Committee. All the members of the committee suggest country names and whenever a new storm is formed, these names are used in that order.
Using names instead of numbers makes it better for people to identify and describe storms during hurricane season and is easier for ordinary people to remember.
Such names have come before also
- Cyclone Dana (2024): This name was given by Saudi Arabia. In Arabic language, Dana means precious gift or generosity.
- Cyclone Remel (2024): This name was given by Oman, which means “sand” in Arabic.
- Cyclone Nisarga (2020): This name was given by Bangladesh, which means “nature”.
In this way, the name of each storm gives a glimpse of the language and culture of the country that proposed it.

Who decides the names of storms?
Different committees decide the names of storms for different ocean areas.
- Storms that arise in the Atlantic Ocean are called hurricanes. Their names are kept from the lists prepared by America’s National Hurricane Center. This tradition started in 1953.
- Storms that arise in the Indian Ocean (Northern Indian Ocean, which includes India) are called cyclones. Here initially a committee of 8 countries Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand used to decide the names. Later, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen were also added to it, making a total of 13 countries. Each country suggests 13 names, and on this basis a list of 169 names was prepared, which are used one by one.
- In the north-western Pacific Ocean, where typhoons like Bavi arise, this responsibility is handled by the Japan Meteorological Agency and a committee of regional countries, which includes many countries including Vietnam, China, Philippines, Japan, South Korea.
