The use of urea depends on the soil of the field, soil testing and irrigation facilities. In general irrigated farming, agricultural scientists recommend giving urea in 3 parts instead of putting it all at once, so that the plants get nitrogen at the right time and the wastage of fertilizer is also reduced.
For the first time: At the time of sowing, apply about one-third of the total nitrogen as basal dose. Along with this, full quantity of phosphorus and potash is also mixed.
Second time: Give second installment of urea just before the first irrigation (usually 20–25 days later, crown root initiation stage) or at the time of irrigation. This stage is considered most important for the formation of more buds.
Third time: Apply remaining urea at the time of second irrigation (after about 40–45 days). This makes the ears better and helps in filling the grains.
