According to religious traditions, a broken (broken or damaged) idol should not be worshipped. For worship, it is necessary for the idol to be complete and in perfect condition. Religious scholars say that the right way is to immerse such an idol respectfully or install it at an appropriate place.
What should be done with a broken statue?
1. Delete with respect
If the idol is broken, do not throw it in the dustbin like a normal object. According to religious beliefs, it should be wrapped in clean cloth and kept respectfully.
2. Immerse or keep at a holy place
In many traditions the broken idol must be immersed in a sacred river, pond or reservoir. Where this is not possible, seek advice from the priest or religious experts associated with the temple.
3. Place the new idol
If puja is done every day in the home temple, then a new idol should be installed with proper rituals.
Is a broken idol inauspicious?
This is a common belief, but in the scriptures its meaning is not associated with fear or evil. According to religious scholars, idol is a medium of faith and worship. If it gets damaged, it should be respected. Fear or superstition should not be spread.
Is this the rule for photos also?
If the picture of God gets torn or damaged, it should also be removed respectfully and immersed in a safe manner. It should not be thrown in the garbage. Understand with an example – Suppose the marble idol of Lord Ganesha kept in the house fell and broke during cleaning. In such a situation, instead of panicking or considering it a bad omen, immerse the idol respectfully by keeping it in a clean cloth. After this, if you wish, you can install a new idol and worship it daily.
