Shivling Puja Rules: Lord Shiva is called Bholenath. It is believed that he becomes happy quickly with the true devotion of his devotees. Therefore, devotion is considered to be of utmost importance in Shiva worship. However, there is mention of some things in religious traditions and scriptures which are not offered to Shivalinga. The question arises that what should not be offered on Shivalinga and what is the reason behind it?

According to religious texts and traditions prevalent in temples, Tulsi leaves are not offered to Shivalinga. There is a mythological story behind it. The story is- Tulsi is considered to be related to Lord Vishnu. According to another belief, Tulsi’s husband Jalandhar was killed by Lord Shiva. For this reason there is no tradition of offering Tulsi in Shiva worship.

Generally turmeric is also not offered on Shivalinga. According to belief, turmeric is considered to be related to good luck and marriage, while Shivlinga is a symbol of the formless form of Lord Shiva. Therefore there is no tradition of offering turmeric on Shivalinga. However, at some places, turmeric is offered to the idol of Lord Shiva as per local traditions.

Even kumkum or vermilion is not offered on Shivalinga. Sindoor is considered a symbol of good luck for married women. Therefore, there is more tradition of offering it to goddess forms. There is no mention of offering it on the Shivalinga of Lord Shiva.

Apart from this, Ketaki (Kevda) flower also does not climb on Shivalinga. This is mentioned in Shiva Purana. According to the story, there was a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu regarding superiority. At that time Ketaki’s flower had given false testimony in support of Brahma. After this Lord Shiva cursed Ketaki flower not to be accepted in his worship. For this reason Ketaki flower is not grown in Shiva temples.
In religious traditions, broken or insect-damaged leaves, stale flowers and rotten fruits are also not offered to Lord Shiva. Use of clean and fresh materials in puja is always considered auspicious.
