After this special honour, Alka shared an emotional message on social media and talked openly about her health journey in the last two years. She told that she is suffering from a rare hearing disease, due to which she was away from public events and limelight for a long time. After this post of Alka, her fans are worried.
Alka Yagnik’s emotional message after receiving Padma Bhushan
After receiving the Padma Bhushan award at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Alka Yagnik wrote on social media, “For the last two years, I have been away from the limelight, public events and sharing my personal journey. Many of you know that I have been going through difficult health conditions. During this time, your love, prayers, messages and unwavering support have been with me at every step.”
Alka Yagnik had revealed the disease in 2024
About two years ago, Alka Yagnik had told that she was suffering from a rare disease called “Sensorineural Hearing Loss”. She had then written, “A few weeks ago, while getting off the flight, I suddenly lost my hearing. After gathering a lot of courage, I am now talking about it. The doctors told me that I have suffered a rare sensorineural nerve hearing loss due to a viral attack. This was a sudden big shock, which I had never imagined.” He also advised the youth to be careful about loud music and using headphones for long periods of time.
What is Sensorineural Hearing Loss?
Sensorineural nerve hearing loss (SNHL) is considered one of the most common permanent hearing problems. This occurs when the extremely sensitive hair cells inside the ear or the auditory nerves that transmit sound to the brain are damaged. Once damaged, these cells and nerves are unable to repair themselves normally. This problem can occur in one ear or both ears and may develop gradually or suddenly.
How and who can get sensorineural nerve hearing loss?
This disease can be congenital, due to increasing age, suddenly, due to noise. This can happen especially to people with increasing age, working in loud noise continuously and using excessive force. It can be caused by viral infection, head or ear injury, diabetes and high blood pressure, excessive use of certain medications, smoking or poor heart health. This can be avoided by avoiding listening to too loud music or by wearing ear protection in noisy places. Getting checked from time to time and not ignoring ear-related problems can help in avoiding this.
What is the treatment for sensorineural nerve hearing loss?
In most cases the problem is considered permanent, but several treatments are available, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, steroid-based treatments (for sudden hearing loss), and speech and auditory therapy. Experts believe that the condition can be controlled better with timely identification and treatment.
