Mumbai (Maharashtra), March 10: Maharashtra Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitesh Rane came up with an initiative to recognise ‘jerk meat’ sellers in Maharashtra. Nitesh Rane launched Malhar Certification initiative on Monday (March 10) for Hindu meat traders across Maharashtra. He launched a website to certify the Hindu meat traders in the state.

Taking to his official social media account, Cabinet Minister of Fisheries & Ports development Nitesh Rane said, “Aaj Malhar Certified Jerk Meat Today we have taken a very important step for the Hindu community in Maharashtra. Malhar Certification.com (http://malharcertification.com) has been launched on this occasion. Through Malhar Certification, we will have access to our rightful mutton shops and there will be a 100 percent Hindu community and the person selling will also be a Hindu. No adulteration will be found in the mutton anywhere. I appeal to you to use Malhar certification as much as possible and in fact, not to buy mutton from places where Malhar certification is not available. These efforts will definitely make the youth of the Hindu community financially empowered.”

What Is Malhar Certification?

Maharashtra Fisheries and Port Minister Nitesh Rane launched the Malhar certification campaign to bring together Hindu meat traders under one platform.

Only Hindu Khatik community traders are allowed to sell meat through this platform.

This initiative ensures that goat and sheep meat is prepared according to Hindu religious customs – meaning it is fresh, clean, free from saliva contamination and not mixed with other animal meat. It also aims to provide non-Halal meat for Hindus and Sikhs who prefer it.

According to the Malhar website, the platform supports sellers who strictly follow Hindu religious practices while preparing meat, ensuring it meets the traditions of the Hindu Khatik community.

The website also mentions the names and addresses of a few websites already selling the jhatka meat in various parts of Maharashtra.

What does Jhatka mean?

The word “Jhatka” is from the Punjabi language which means “swift”.

What is the importance of Jhatka?

Jhatka is important for those who follow the tradition because it minimises the suffering caused to the animal which is being slaughtered.

It is preferred by most meat-consuming Sikhs and Hindus.

Jhatka does not follow any religious process, so it can be consumed by the people of other religions also. However, Halal is a religious process of slaughtering animals for consumption.

How is Jhatka different from Halal?

Jhatka: The animal is killed instantly, while in the Halal method, the animal’s throat is slit after which it dies gradually.

Religious Importance: Jhatka is practiced by certain communities, particularly Sikhs. Halal is a method of slaughter that Muslims community follows.
