What is a time capsule, what things did America bury in it?

This time capsule will now be opened in America after 250 years in 2276.

On completion of 250 years of independence, America has buried a time capsule weighing 408 kg in the ground. He is buried in Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. It has been claimed that this happened so that the coming generations could find it after 250 years. Can know about it. Memorabilia collected from common people have been preserved in this capsule. It includes whale bone, fabric from the Wright Brothers’ plane, historical documents and sand from the world’s largest gypsum desert.

If understood in simple language, a time capsule is like a box or container. Which has been created to keep things safe for decades so that future generations can understand the things kept in it. Can see. This time capsule is buried in the same Philadelphia where America celebrates independence. The Declaration of Independence was approved in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. Therefore this place was chosen for the capsule. The capsule will remain sealed here for the next 250 years and will be opened in 2276, when America will celebrate its 500th anniversary.

How was the time capsule made?

The most important thing in making a capsule is to keep it safe for decades. Now the question arises how to keep it safe. For this the capsule has been given the shape of a cylinder. Many reports have claimed that the capsules were not made rectangular or square because their corners become weak with time. There is a danger of moisture getting inside from here.

What Is Time Capsule

Time Capsule.

buried 10 feet under

It has been claimed that the capsule is made from indium metal. It is a soft metal. That is, when the capsule is closed, it automatically fills small cracks. If we understand in simple language, when it is pressed, the part with cracks automatically joins itself.

If there was too much moisture inside the Time Capsule, papers and other sensitive items could get damaged. At the same time, if there was no moisture at all, many things would dry out excessively and start becoming brittle or broken. To maintain this balance, scientists have maintained about 35% moisture inside the capsule.

It is buried 10 feet below so that it is not affected by temperature fluctuations. This means that the impact of extreme heat, extreme cold and storms is very less.

Additional steel cylinder installed

Scientists say that the biggest threat to any time capsule kept underground is water. For this reason, an additional steel cylinder has been installed around the capsule. There will be a layer of air present between the two layers, which will work to prevent water coming from outside from reaching inside. This system is based on the same principle that when a bucket is immersed upside down in water, air remains trapped inside it and the water is unable to go inside.

Even if the groundwater level rises in the future or a flood-like situation occurs, this layer of air will still help in keeping the capsule safe from water. According to Michael Barilla, the lead scientist of this project, if water ever reaches this time capsule, it would mean that the city of Philadelphia would be submerged in about 6 feet of water. He says that in such a situation, the concern will not be only about the time capsule, but about a major natural crisis.

When was the time capsule buried in India?

India’s first government time capsule was buried near the Red Fort in Delhi in 1973, on the completion of 25 years of independence in India, during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It was named ‘Kalpatra’.

This capsule was planned to be opened after 1,000 years, so that future generations can know how India was built and developed after independence. A copy of the Constitution, detailed history of the freedom movement and post-independence India, government documents and many important information of that time were kept in it.

However, this plan could not be completed. After the formation of the Janata Party government at the Center in 1977, Kalpatra was evicted from the land. The new government alleged that India’s history has been presented from the perspective of the then government and the Nehru-Gandhi family. Due to this controversy, this issue became a subject of political and public debate.

Later some of its contents were presented in Parliament, but the entire record was never made public. Even today there is a discussion among historians about what was actually kept in Kalpatra and in which government archives it is currently kept safe.
