The Election Commission (EC) has canceled the voting in Phalta assembly seat of South 24 Parganas. Now re-polling will be conducted at all 285 booths here. This decision has come at a time when EVM malfunctions, violence and huge complaints during the elections have created tension in the entire area.
Why was the voting of Falta seat cancelled?
According to the Election Commission, many serious irregularities were revealed in the voting held on April 29. Such complaints came from many booths, which gave rise to suspicion of ‘tampering with the democratic process’. In some cases, there were allegations that the EVM buttons were tampered with. At some places tape was placed and at some places marks were made so that the voter’s choice could be known. Considering these complaints as serious, the Commission canceled the entire election.
What happened in Falta?
Falta falls in South 24 Parganas district, the atmosphere there became quite heated after voting. Locals alleged that some political workers threatened them and warned of violence. After this, hundreds of villagers came out on the streets and started demanding re-voting. As the situation worsened, CRPF was deployed for security, assuring people that voting would be peaceful next time.
What complaints were received regarding EVM?
The Election Commission had received a total of more than 70 complaints, in which irregularities related to EVMs were mentioned. In some complaints it was said that tape was placed on the buttons of the machine, due to which the voter was not able to press the button of his choice. At the same time, in some cases, it was also revealed that aromatic substances were applied on the buttons, due to which an attempt could be made to identify who voted for whom.
When and result date of re-voting on Falta seat
Now new voting on Falta seat will be held on 21 May 2026 from 7 am to 6 pm. After this the counting of votes will be done on 24 May 2026. This means that the decision of this seat will come on a different day from the other results, due to which the political equation can also change.
Re-poll held in West Bengal on Saturday
On Saturday, the Election Commission had also conducted re-polling in some booths of Diamond Harbor and Magrahat West. In the re-poll conducted at a total of 15 booths, around 90% voting was recorded, which shows that people are excited to vote again.
