Arvind Kejriwal government is working on war footing towards cleaning Yamuna of Delhi. In this direction, Kejriwal government is building Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant in Okhla, where 564 million liters of sewage will be treated daily. This project is in its final stages. Water Minister Atishi visited here on Thursday to inspect this project. Water Minister Atishi reprimanded the officials for the delay in the project. Atishi directed to start the plant by the end of this year.
Water Minister Atishi said that this plant with 564 MLD capacity is going to prove to be a game changer in the direction of cleaning Yamuna. He said that after the commencement of this plant, instead of releasing crores of liters of sewer directly into Yamuna every day, it will be cleaned and released. After the commissioning of this plant, the Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) level of dirty water can be cleaned and brought down to 10. This plant will not only help in cleaning Yamuna but will also be useful for other things including gardening.
New timeline given to officials
During this, the Water Minister also expressed his displeasure over the delay in the project. After which he directed the officials to complete the remaining work by the end of the year with the new timeline. He said that he should get its progress report every Monday. He said that this plant is very important towards cleaning Yamuna. In such a situation, now even a day’s delay in its construction will not be tolerated.
Once operational, Okhla STP will be Asia’s largest wastewater plant – capable of single-handedly treating nearly 20% of Delhi’s sewage!

Officials shared with the Water Minister that this plant will receive sewage from most parts of Central Delhi (mainly NDMC area), South Delhi. Here, using state-of-the-art technologies including UV, sewage water will be treated and the Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) level will be brought down to 10. Only after that clean water will be released into Yamuna.
Lakhs of people will get work
He said that 40 lakh people will benefit through this plant. This plant will serve the sewage of a very large populated area of Delhi. This is Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant, which alone will clean 15 to 20 percent of Delhi’s sewage. The plant will produce bio-gas from sewage sludge and will meet 4.8 MW electricity, half of the energy requirement itself.
According to the information, this plant will be able to meet half of its energy needs on its own through green energy. In the plant, 4.8 MW electricity can be produced through bio-gas produced from sewage sludge. Apart from this, waste to energy plant can also be run from the sludge and it can also be used as fertilizer.
