Earlier today, another survivor of a boat tragedy off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island recalled the terrifying moments when the boat capsized within seconds due to a “sudden storm”. She said rescue teams acted quickly, but medical facilities on a nearby island should have been better, which could have helped save lives.

Eyewitness described the horrifying scene

A tourist speedboat carrying 36 people, including 32 Indian tourists, capsized off the coast of Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island. The Indian Embassy in Vietnam later confirmed that all 15 people killed in the crash were Indian tourists.

Speaking to ANI, Nirmal Kumar, one of the survivors of the accident, said that the boat had 32 passengers on board and was sailing from one island to another when it was hit by bad weather. He said, “As we were moving from one island to another, suddenly there was a storm… Suddenly, within a second, the boat started capsizing. We were on the forward side and jumped into the sea and came out. The people who were inside got trapped, and since the boat had capsized, they could not get out of the boat. We were thirty-two people on the boat, but in total we were one hundred and five people.”

Questions raised on rescue work and medical facilities

Confirming that assistance was provided by Indian authorities, he said, “Yesterday they came, and they are doing their process. Everyone went back… We are four people from the company, and I am staying here.” Kumar said the local rescue team responded immediately. “They rescued us, but some of the medical equipment was not available on that island. There was a doctor traveling with us. He said there were no medicines available here, so we couldn’t save lives… More lives could have been saved. The necessary aid was not available for the number of people in need on the island. The Vietnam Air Force came two to three hours later, and they guided us, they treated us.”

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to this tragic accident. (ANI)
