Story of Vat Savitri Vrat
According to the story of Mahabharata, in ancient times, Bhadra country was ruled by King Ashwapati. He was a very glorious king, but was always sad because he did not have children. With the desire to have a child, he performed rigorous penance for years and worshiped Goddess Savitri. Pleased with his devotion, the goddess blessed him with a daughter. After some time, a beautiful girl was born in the king’s house, who was named Savitri.

Growing up, Savitri was very talented, intelligent and bright. When it came to her marriage, King Ashwapati allowed her to choose a suitable groom himself. During the journey, Savitri met Prince Satyavan who lived in the forest. Satyavan was the son of King Dyumtsena, whose kingdom was snatched away by his enemies. Savitri chose Satyavan as her husband.

When Savitri told this to her father, Narada Muni arrived there and told that Satyavan was very virtuous, but his life was very short and he would die after a year of marriage. Hearing this, King Ashwapati became worried and asked Savitri to choose another groom, but Savitri did not deviate from her decision. Ultimately she was married to Satyavan.
After marriage, Savitri started serving her husband and in-laws. When the day of Satyavan’s death approached, Savitri observed a strict fast. On the appointed day she went to the forest with Satyavan. While cutting wood there, Satyavan suddenly fainted and fell in Savitri’s lap. Then Yamraj came to take his life.
When Yamraj started leaving with Satyavan’s soul, Savitri also followed him. Seeing his loyalty and dedication, Yamraj gave many boons. At last Savitri cleverly asked for a boon which brought Satyavan back to life. In this way Savitri got her husband’s life back through her devout religion and determination.
