On Vat Savitri fast, which is observed on the Amavasya of Jeshtha, married women wish for the long life and happy future of their husbands. The story is that on this very day, Savitri, with her unwavering determination, had defeated Yamraj and brought back her husband’s life.
According to old stories, Savitri, daughter of King Ashwapati of Madra country, chose Dyumtsena’s son Satyavan as her husband. Although Narad Muni had already warned that Satyavan was very young and would die within a year, Savitri remained firm on her decision. After marriage, when the last day of Satyavan’s life came, he went to the forest to cut wood and Savitri also joined him. Under a banyan tree in the forest, Satyavan placed his head in Savitri’s lap and his life began to die out. At the same time, Yamraj reached there and took Satyavan’s life and moved towards the south, but Savitri was not one to accept defeat.
Savitri’s wisdom and 3 boons received from Yamraj
Savitri also followed Yamraj. Yamraj asked her many times to go back home, but Savitri made Yamraj think with her wisdom and logical words. Seeing Savitri’s devotion, Yamraj asked her to ask for three boons, but put a condition that she would not ask for her husband’s life. In the first boon, Savitri asked for the eyesight of her father-in-law, in the second boon she asked for her father-in-law’s lost kingdom and in the third boon she asked for the blessing of becoming the mother of a hundred sons. Yamraj said ‘Amen’ without thinking. After this, Savitri reminded Yamraj that how can a devoted woman get the happiness of a child without a husband? Yamraj got trapped in his own words and had to accept defeat and return Satyavan’s life.

Banyan tree’s message of glory and victory
Savitri immediately returned to the same banyan tree where Satyavan’s body was lying. As soon as Savitri reached there, Satyavan came alive and sat up. The banyan tree had protected the body of Savitri’s husband in its shadow, that is why worship of the banyan tree is considered most important during this fast. After listening to this story, women worship the banyan tree and ask for the blessing of their uninterrupted marriage. This story teaches us that not only worship, but also our wisdom and right behavior can avoid troubles in the family.
