In Hindu religion, the full moon of Jyeshtha month is considered to have special significance. On this day, Vat Savitri Vrat, which is also called Vat Purnima at many places, is celebrated with devotion and faith. This fast is considered very important especially for married women. There is a religious belief that worshiping the banyan tree and observing fast on this day brings blessings of unbroken good fortune, long life of the husband, happy married life and prosperity of the family. According to Drik Panchang, in the year 2026 Vat Purnima The fast will be observed on 29th June.
What is the significance of Vat Purnima?
Vat Purnima is not just a fast, but is considered a symbol of unwavering love, trust and dedication of husband and wife. According to religious beliefs, observing fast on this day and worshiping as per rituals maintains love in married life and brings happiness and prosperity in the family. This fast is related to the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
Vat Purnima is related to the mythological story of Savitri-Satyavan. According to the story, when Satyavan’s life was over and Yamraj came to take his life, Savitri pleased Yamraj with the power of her intelligence, determination and devotion to her husband. Ultimately Yamraj gave the boon of resurrection to Satyavan. Since then, this fast started being observed to wish for unbroken good fortune and long life of the husband.
Why is the banyan tree worshipped?
According to religious beliefs, Vat i.e. banyan tree is considered a symbol of longevity, stability and prosperity. It is believed that all three gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh reside in this tree. Therefore, on the day of Vat Purnima, a banyan tree is worshiped and raw cotton is wrapped around it and prayers are offered for a happy married life.
How is Vat Purnima worshipped?
On the day of Vat Purnima, after taking bath in the morning, a resolution to fast is taken by wearing clean clothes. After this, water, roli, akshat, flowers, fruits and other worship materials are offered under the banyan tree. Women circumambulate around the tree with raw cotton and listen or read the story of Savitri-Satyavan. At the end, aarti of Lord Vishnu, Mata Lakshmi and Banyan tree is performed and wishes for the happiness and prosperity of the family are made.
What to do on Vat Purnima?
On the day of fasting, follow the rules and devotion. Worship the banyan tree as per the rituals, listen to the story of Savitri-Satyavan and donate to the needy people as per your capacity. On this day, maintaining a peaceful environment at home and having positive thoughts is also considered auspicious.
