Varun Dhawan Recalls The Time He Picked Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Over Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: ‘I Was Dying To Watch…’

Varun Dhawan reminisced about a humorous childhood memory involving a clash between two iconic films: his father David Dhawan’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (BMCM) and Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (K2H2).

The year was 1998 and Varun faced the tough decision of choosing between his father’s film and his personal favourite, K2H2.

Varun in an interview with The Indian Express, recalled the premiere of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which took place in London. He described how the producers had arranged a limousine adorned with posters of stars Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. Despite the excitement, Varun couldn’t shake off his desire to see K2H2 instead. He humorously noted, “I was dying to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai… I didn’t even know Karan at that point.”

His enthusiasm for K2H2, however, didn’t sit well with his father. David jokingly threatened to leave Varun on the streets of London if he continued to express his preference. “I remember telling him you can’t treat children like this,” Varun laughed. His father’s retort was equally amusing, as he lamented Varun’s behaviour, questioning why he brought him along.

Ultimately, while BMCM had a strong opening due to its mass appeal, K2H2 went on to become a cultural phenomenon. Varun reflected on this experience with gratitude, noting that he eventually got launched into Bollywood through Karan Johar’s film Student of the Year in 2012.

Today, Varun is known for a successful career with hits like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, and Jugjugg Jeeyo. He is currently gearing up for his upcoming Prime Video release, Citadel: Honey Bunny, which co-stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
