Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the lead role, is set to release in theatres in April 2027. Directed by SS Rajamouli, Varanasi has been creating a solid buzz among the masses since its inception.
The Baahubali director keeps sharing exciting updates about his upcoming magnum opus on social media. Recently, he attended a masterclass at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, where Rajamouli shared a new update about Varanasi. During a session, the RRR filmmaker confirmed that Varanasi will be a standalone film. He will not follow the franchise route for his next venture.
What Did SS Rajamouli Reveal About Varanasi?
SS Rajamouli has taken a break from the shoot to attend the festival in Europe, where the screenings of his couple of films, RRR and Eega, were held. He talked about his next project at the festival. The director revealed that Varanasi’s story is deeply rooted in an emotional father-son relationship.
While describing what audiences can expect from Varanasi, the director stated that the viewer will experience the cold and ice of Antarctica. He further said, “The Gods of Ramayana, the natural disasters and fantastic elements. That’s the experience you are going to have, but at the core of all this is the emotions of father and son. All this makes Varanasi for you.”
When asked about if the film will be released in two parts, clarified that Varanasi will be a standalone film. Earlier, Rajamouli’s father and veteran writer Vijayendra Prasad revealed that the film will have a 30-minute long battle between Rama and Kumbhakarna. He stated the sequences draw from The Ramayana. For the unversed, Rajamouli’s last film, RRR turned out to be a blockbuster at the box office.
About Varanasi
SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi is considered one of the most expensive films being made in Indian cinema. The film will mark Priyanka Chopra’s comeback to Indian cinema after an eight-year gap.
