Then why is the connection made with Valentine’s Day?

The romanticized form of modern Valentine’s Day developed much later, so it is difficult to draw direct continuity from Lupercalia.

The most honest and obvious fact is that connections are often made on the basis of conjecture or folklore and evidence is necessary for decisions to be made.
