The Dehradun branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) launched a major enforcement drive in Jwalapur area of ​​Haridwar after receiving a complaint of fake hallmarking. During this operation, searches and detailed investigation were conducted at two jewelery establishments. BIS clarified that such campaigns will continue in future to maintain transparency in the hallmarking system and protect the interests of consumers.

BIS Raid in Haridwar: Raid on two jewelery establishments of Jwalapur

The BIS team conducted an investigation operation at two jewelery establishments named Jahangir and Badshah located in Jwalapur. Officials closely examined the hallmarking equipment, documents and other technical evidence on the spot.

A cutting machine was also recovered during the search. BIS has kept this machine under its supervision for further technical examination and testing. Investigation of the entire matter is going on under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and related rules. After completion of investigation, necessary action will be taken as per rules.

Fake Hallmarking Action: BIS’s focus on protecting the interests of consumers

Sachin Choudhary, Joint Director, BIS, Dehradun, said that the organization is fully committed to maintaining the credibility of the hallmarking system across the country and giving assurance of safe shopping to the consumers. He appealed to all the jewelers to get the gold jewelery hallmarked only from BIS authorized hallmarking centers and completely follow all the legal rules.

BIS Care App Update: Now photo and weight of jewelery will be visible through HUID

Joint Director Sachin Chaudhary said that a new feature has been added to the BIS Care App from June 1, 2026. Now consumers can see the photo of any gold jewelery and its weight by verifying the 6 digit HUID. This new feature will make it easier to identify whether the jewelery being purchased is actually issued for the same HUID or not. This will reduce the possibility of fake hallmarking to a great extent.

Gold Jewelery Buyers Alert: Check HUID before buying

BIS has appealed to all consumers to verify the 6 digit HUID on BIS Care App before purchasing gold jewellery. Also match the photo and weight shown in the app with the actual jewellery. If there is any difference between the HUID information and the jewelery being purchased, immediately inform BIS. According to officials, this simple process will prove to be very effective in preventing fake hallmarking and consumer fraud.

BIS News: Campaign will continue in future to stop fake hallmarking

The Bureau of Indian Standards clarified that such enforcement campaigns will be conducted regularly in future also to maintain transparency in the hallmarking system, strengthen consumer confidence and strictly stop fake hallmarking. The objective of BIS is to ensure the sale of only certified and safe hallmarked jewelery in the market.
