Netanyahu-Trump Rift: America and Israel have always been considered close friends. But after the US deal with Iran, there seems to be a rift in the relationship between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has openly said that “Israel would not exist without me.” Not only this, he has even called Netanyahu ‘crazy’ and irresponsible. On the other hand, Netanyahu seems to be taking decisions that may put Trump’s Iran policy in trouble. In such a situation, the question is arising whether there is really a rift in the relations between the two leaders or is there some big strategy working behind it?
Operation Rising Lion: When Trump and Netanyahu were seen together
Till a few months ago the picture was completely different. In June 2025, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) accused Iran of violating its nuclear obligations. Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion” soon thereafter. On June 13, 2025, major attacks were carried out on several military and nuclear targets of Iran. Tehran was also the target of these attacks. Initially it was considered an entirely Israeli military operation, but soon America also got involved. At that time it was discussed that Trump was not in favor of a direct attack on Iran and was angry with Netanyahu. But on June 22, 2025, America started ‘Operation Midnight Hammer’. American B-2 stealth bombers dropped powerful bunker buster bombs on Iran’s key nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan. After these incidents, the world felt that Trump and Netanyahu were working on the same strategy.
Joint military operation of 2026 showed strong alliance
This was followed by another joint military operation by the US and Israel in February 2026, amid protests and government crackdown inside Iran. According to reports, more than 900 attacks were carried out within just 12 hours. Iran’s air defense system suffered heavy damage in this campaign. Many military bases were destroyed and the Iranian leadership also suffered a major blow. At that time it was believed that the alliance between Trump and Netanyahu had become stronger than before. But after this period, the difference in priorities of the two leaders started becoming visible.
Both have similar views on Iran, but different goals
Experts believe that the real problem lies not in the thinking of the two leaders regarding Iran, but in their ultimate goal. Trump’s priority now is to end the war and reach a major agreement. They face challenges like America’s domestic politics, rising fuel prices, a war-weary public and the upcoming elections. Trump wants a major agreement with Iran so that he can present it as a major achievement of his foreign policy. At the same time, Netanyahu believes that Iran cannot be stopped through talks alone. He appears to be in favor of sustained pressure and military action. That is, even though the opponent of both the leaders is the same, their goals regarding it seem to be different.
Why did the tension between Trump and Netanyahu increase?
In the past few weeks, Israel attacked several targets linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon. US officials were concerned that these actions could affect ongoing negotiations with Iran. During this time, Trump started publicly criticizing Netanyahu for the first time. At the G-7 conference, he said that he had told Netanyahu in clear words that he did not like the recent steps. After this, another statement of Trump remained much discussed. He said, “Without me there would be no Israel.” This statement was criticized in America also. Many Jewish organizations and political groups criticized this as arrogant and unfair.
Is Trump’s anger just a show?
Many experts who keep an eye on Middle East politics believe that Trump’s resentment may not be completely genuine. He says that Trump often acts like a businessman and a deal-making leader. Whenever he gets close to an important agreement, he uses public rhetoric to exert pressure. Experts argue that sending a message to Iran that there are differences between the US and Israel could also be part of the negotiation strategy. This signals to Tehran that Trump is serious about the peace agreement and can also control Netanyahu if necessary.
