The U.S. Consulate General Kolkata has announced a new pilot program for B1/B2 visa applicants, hinting at shorter wait times and faster processing for genuine business travellers and tourists.
In a social media post, the consulate said the initiative aims to support “American economic priorities” by prioritising travellers who help strengthen business and tourism ties between India and the United States.
The post also mentioned shorter wait times for eligible applicants, especially those travelling for business meetings, conferences, trade activities, tourism, or family visits.
America First in Prosperity!
The new B1/B2 pilot at Consulate Kolkata puts American economic priorities first—and that means prioritizing YOU if you’re a business traveler or genuine tourist. Shorter wait times for those who strengthen U.S.-India ties.

What the New B1/B2 Visa Pilot Means for Visitors
The B1 visa is meant for business-related travel, while the B2 visa covers tourism, medical visits, and family trips. Most Indian applicants receive a combined B1/B2 visa.
The new pilot does not create a new visa category or change existing eligibility rules. Applicants will still need to attend interviews, submit documents, and prove strong ties to their home country.
However, the move suggests that the Kolkata consulate may begin prioritising low-risk applicants with clear travel histories and genuine travel purposes.
Faster Appointments Possible
Although the consulate has not shared full details on how the pilot will work, the mention of “shorter wait times” suggests faster interview scheduling or quicker application processing for selected travellers.
This could especially benefit:
- Frequent business travellers
- Tourists with strong financial records
- Applicants with previous international travel history
- Individuals travelling for legitimate short-term purposes
No Official Policy Change Yet
So far, the pilot appears limited to the Kolkata consulate and remains a trial initiative. There is no confirmation yet on whether similar programs will expand to other US consulates in India.
The announcement comes as demand for US visitor visas remains high among Indian travellers, with appointment wait times continuing to be a major concern for many applicants.
Priority US Visa Appointments for Parents
Earlier this month, the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata also introduced priority visa appointment slots for eligible parents whose children are legally residing in the United States.
The initiative is designed to help parents facing long visitor visa wait times, especially those travelling for family visits and reunions. The consulate said the focus is on applicants with genuine travel purposes and strong family ties in the US.
Why Kolkata?
Right now, it looks like a trial run only at the Kolkata consulate. If it works well, the US could expand similar processing at other consulates later. No official details yet on how applicants will be selected, though.
Travelobiz Take
We believe these smaller visa processing pilots could eventually help reduce long US visitor visa delays in India, especially for genuine tourists, business travellers, and families waiting to reunite with loved ones.
