If UPTET shift is different then the paper will also be different?

Yes of corse. When such a large number of candidates are divided and made to sit in different shifts, the question paper for each shift is different. The same paper cannot be given in all shifts, otherwise the risk of copying and leaks increases. And where the paper is different, there is a justified fear that, ‘My paper was tough, the second shift’s paper was easy, so will they get the advantage?’ This is where one word is heard a lot, normalization.

What is normalization?

Suppose your and your friend’s exam was held on different days. Your paper was a little difficult and your friend’s was easy. If you compare directly with the marks, your marks will appear less even though you worked hard. Normalization is one way to fix this error. In this, instead of looking at the raw marks directly, it is seen how you performed compared to your shift. That means your score is converted into a ‘percentile’, meaning how many people you were ahead of in your shift. This method is used in exams like UGC-NET and CUET, because there a merit list and rank has to be prepared by combining the scores of each shift. But the real story in UPTET is a little different.

Will there be normalization in UPTET 2026 or not?

UPTET is a qualifying exam, not a ranking exam. Meaning, it is not a matter of making merit list or top rank. All you have to do is cross a fixed cutoff and you get the TET certificate, which remains valid for lifetime. In the old pattern, the cutoff for General Category was around 90 marks out of 150 (i.e. 60%) and for Reserve Category it was around 82 marks (55%). Many coaching sites are still mentioning this benchmark, although the final and official notice is still awaited. When the exam is only pass or fail type qualifying, with fixed cutoffs, then percentile normalization to equalize shift-to-shift numbers is not required as is the case in CUET or NET. Till now, no official announcement has come from UPESSC that percentile based normalization will be imposed in UPTET 2026. So there is nothing to fear. Your target is simple and clear: to cross the cutoff of your category, no matter what shift you get.

Still, why is the paper for each shift different?

This question is also valid. The exam making team tries to ensure that the level of papers of each shift remains approximately the same by maintaining the balance of syllabus, section and difficulty. But a slight difference remains. Since the cutoff is fixed (not percentile based), this small difference does not have a direct impact on whether you pass or fail. You just have to cross the cutoff with your marks.

So what should be the safe score so that one remains tension free?

If we combine the old trends and the opinion of coaching experts, then try to get at least 100 to 105 marks out of 150 for general category candidates. This will keep you well above the cutoff and leave no stone unturned. For OBC, SC, ST and other reserved categories, keep a target of 90 to 95 marks. This is also a safe zone just above the official cutoff.

One advantage you must know in UPTET

There is no negative marking in UPTET. Meaning, not a single mark will be deducted for giving wrong answer. If the question is left blank then you will get zero and if you give a wrong answer then you will still get zero, so the loss is equal. This means clearly, do not leave any question blank in the exam hall. Whatever comes, keep filling it. If you answer even with a guess, there will be a chance of being right and even if you are wrong, nothing will be lost. There are 150 questions and 150 minutes time, that is, on average one minute for each question. Time management can prove to be a game-changer here.
