UP: SP leader Vinay Shankar Tiwari arrested ED, action in 754 crore bank fraud case

The Enforcement Directorate on Sunday arrested Samajwadi Party leader and former MLA Vinay Shankar Tiwari. The ED has also arrested his company’s MD Ajit Pandey along with former MLA from Chilupar seat. This action of ED has been done in the morning after raid at about ten places in the country including Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Noida and Mumbai.

This action was carried out by the ED on Monday morning. According to sources, the ED had prepared a charge sheet against him. Soon he is to be produced in court. Investigation revealed that Messrs Gangotri Enterprises Limited along with its promoters has lost about Rs 754.24 crore to Bank of India.

Property worth Rs 72.08 crore has been seized

Vinay Shankar Tiwari’s company along with its promoters and investors took advantage of credit facilities worth Rs 1129.44 crore from the Consortium of seven banks led by Bank of India. Later, he diverted this amount to other companies and did not return the amount of banks. Due to this, the consortium of banks suffered a loss of about Rs 754.24 crore.

Former MLA Vinay Shankar Tiwari’s assets worth Rs 72.08 crore were seized by the ED in November 2023. The ED took this action by Vinay Tiwari’s company Gangotri Enterprises Limited in the case of grabbing about Rs 1129.44 crore to the bank’s consortium. On the complaint of banks, the CBI headquarters had registered a case in this case.

ED filed a case under the Money Laundering Act

After this, the ED also registered a case under the Money Laundering Act against the director, promoter and guarantor of the company including Vinay Tiwari and started investigation. In 2023, the zonal office of ED in the capital had seized a total of 27 properties of Vinay Tiwari in Gorakhpur, Maharajganj and Lucknow, including arable land, business complex, residential complex, residential plots etc.

Keeps related to political family

Vinay Shankar Tiwari contested the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections on Bahujan Samaj Party ticket. In this election, he defeated BJP’s Rajesh Tripathi by about 3300 votes in Chilupar seat. After this, he joined the Samajwadi Party in the year 2021. Earlier, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he stood against Yogi Adityanath. But he had to face a crushing defeat.

Vinay Shankar Tiwari belongs to a heavy political family. His father Hari Shankar Tiwari has been an MLA from Chilupar 6 times. His elder brother Bhishma Shankar Tiwari has also been an MP. Bhishma Shankar Tiwari reached Lok Sabha in 2009 after winning elections from Sant Kabir Nagar.
