UP Health News: Will the facilities of government hospitals in UP become better now? Will the health system change due to record increase in medical college and MBBS seats? How many patients got free treatment under Ayushman Yojana? Will Health ATM, Ambulance and Digital Health Mission provide great relief to the common people?
Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed officials in the review meeting of the Health and Medical Education Department on Tuesday that the direct benefits of government health services should reach the general public. He said that the quality of treatment, investigation, medicines and emergency services in hospitals should be continuously improved. Also, medical colleges, nursing institutions and super specialty services should be strengthened through modern technology, trained human resources and effective management.
UP Medical Colleges Expansion: Record increase in medical college and PG seats
It was informed in the meeting that at present 108 district hospitals, 106 specialized hospitals, 976 community health centres, 3757 primary health centers and 27,668 health sub-centres are operating in the state. During the year 2025-26, 26.41 crore OPD and 1.23 crore IPD services were provided in government hospitals. Apart from this, 24.33 crore pathology tests were also conducted.
According to the information given by the government, in the year 2016-17, the number of medical colleges in the state was 44, which has now increased to 83. That means an increase of about 88.6 percent has been recorded. During the same period, PG seats have increased from 1344 to 5067 and MBBS seats have increased from 5390 to 12,800. Super specialty seats have also increased by about 165 percent.
The Chief Minister said that the objective of medical education is not only to increase the number of institutions but also to provide skilled doctors, specialists and trained health workers to the state. He gave instructions to promote modern equipment, expert faculty and research activities in medical institutions.
Nursing Education Mission Niramaya: Emphasis on Nursing Education and Mission Niramaya
At present 652 nursing institutions are operating in the state. There has also been a rapid increase in seats for ANM, GNM and B.Sc Nursing courses. There are approximately 3.95 lakh registered nursing staff available in the state. Information about the reforms done under ‘Mission Niramaya 1.0’ was also given in the meeting. It was told that counseling sessions were organized in 17 thousand schools, due to which more than 3.5 lakh students were reached. Also, 10,570 nursing faculty members were given training.
Ayushman Yojana UP: Free treatment to more than 96 lakh patients
The Chief Minister said that Ayushman Yojana is becoming the biggest support for poor families. He directed that the claims should be settled within the stipulated time frame so that the hospitals can get the payments on time and the patients continue to get better facilities. It was told in the meeting that 6480 hospitals in the state are associated with Ayushman Yojana and till now more than 96.75 lakh patients have been treated free of cost. The Chief Minister directed to include AYUSH methods in the Deendayal Upadhyay State Employees Cashless Medical Scheme. He said that IPD services of systems like Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy should also become part of the scheme.
Big decision on Health ATM, ASHA Workers Payment and Covid workers
CM Yogi directed that the health workers providing services during the Covid period should be adjusted on priority basis under the National Health Mission. He said that payment to Asha workers should not remain pending under any circumstances. Along with this, emphasis was laid on expanding health ATM services and making the communicable disease control campaign more effective. The Chief Minister described public awareness, cleanliness and timely treatment as the basis of the success of the campaign.
Focus on Maternal Mortality and Digital Health Mission
The Chief Minister directed to strengthen safe and institutional delivery system to further reduce maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate. He said that better health facilities should reach every pregnant woman on time. It was informed in the meeting that more than 15.28 crore Abha IDs have been created under Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. More than 15.14 crore electronic health records have been linked. Hospital Information System and Lab Information System are also being expanded rapidly.
Medical Research UP: 1500 crore investment proposal in research and medtech sector
Emphasizing on promoting medical research and innovation, the Chief Minister said that medical institutions should be linked to research-based health services. It was informed in the meeting that work is going on at a rapid pace on ‘UP-IMRAS’ digital initiative, multi-disciplinary research unit, clinical trial unit and medtech programs. Proposals for investment of about Rs 1500 crore in health research and medtech sector have also been filed.
New Medical Projects UP: New medical colleges and trauma centers will start soon
The Chief Minister directed to complete the work of under-construction medical colleges and health institutions within the stipulated time. Upcoming projects include multi-storey girls hostel at Gorakhpur Medical College, 110 bed trauma center at Ayodhya Medical College, B.Sc Nursing College at Saharanpur Medical College and expansion of mental illness department and de-addiction ward at Kanpur Medical College. It was also informed in the meeting that the process of opening medical colleges on PPP model is progressing rapidly. Medical colleges are running in Maharajganj, Shamli and Sambhal while the process is going on in many other districts.
Ambulance Service UP: Instructions to reduce response time
The meeting was informed that the response time of 108 ambulances and advanced life support services has continuously improved. At present 375 ALS ambulances are operating in the state and till now 9.38 lakh patients have been referred. The Chief Minister directed to further reduce ambulance response time and ensure timely payment of operators.
Expansion in Dialysis, CT Scan and Robotic Surgery services
Giving strict instructions regarding the quality of medicines in hospitals, the Chief Minister said that medicines with expiry of less than three months should not be available in hospitals. It was told in the meeting that dialysis services are available in 75 districts of the state and CT scan services are available in 74 districts. Till March 2026, 35.69 lakh dialysis sessions and 45.35 lakh CT scans have been conducted. Tele-radiology services are also operated at 227 CHCs.
Dr. More than 376 robotic surgeries and more than 250 kidney transplants have been performed so far at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences. The state’s first Gamma Knife Center is also being established here. At the same time, work is going on at a fast pace on the 500-bed Advanced Pediatric Center at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
TB Free India Campaign: Preparation to make TB free campaign a mass movement
The Chief Minister stressed on making the TB eradication campaign a mass movement. He instructed to connect schools, colleges and voluntary organizations with this campaign. It was told in the meeting that Uttar Pradesh has been honored by the Central Government for its excellent performance in the 100-day TB-free India campaign.
The Chief Minister also talked about increasing the honorarium of contract MBBS doctors. He said that technology, accountability and sensitivity should be visible together in health services, only then public trust will be strengthened.
