West Bengal Minister Arjun Singh said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented not only in Bengal but in the entire country. He also said that the foreign bank accounts of Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee will also be brought back to the country.
Kolkata (West Bengal) [भारत]July 12 (ANI): West Bengal minister Arjun Singh on Saturday said the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented not just in West Bengal but across the country, as the state government moved ahead with the process of drafting the law through an expert committee. “UCC will be implemented not just in Bengal but across the country,” Singh told reporters.
Formation of expert committee on UCC
His comments came after the West Bengal government constituted a nine-member expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine and finalize the draft Uniform Civil Code. The state government plans to introduce the proposed legislation during the upcoming August assembly session.
According to the state government, indigenous communities will be exempted from the proposed law. The committee comprises former judges, legal experts, bureaucrats and representatives from the social sector, which will examine various aspects of the draft law before submitting its recommendations.
Earlier, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had announced in the Assembly that the draft UCC would be introduced during the August session after the necessary procedural steps are completed. He had said that the committee will study the proposed law and give its recommendations before the government moves forward.
Arjun Singh also spoke on TMC’s bank accounts
Meanwhile, commenting on the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) action to freeze the bank accounts of Trinamool Congress (TMC), Singh said, “In the coming days, the bank accounts of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee which are abroad will also be brought back to the country.”
The comment comes after ED froze Rs 440.42 crore lying in three HDFC bank accounts of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). This action has been taken in connection with the investigation into alleged dishonest financial transactions, illegal collection of funds and routing of suspicious funds through some bank accounts linked to the party.
TMC has denied any wrongdoing and alleged that the ED’s action is politically motivated. In a statement, the party said that full disclosure of all funds in its bank accounts has been made to the Election Commission of India and the Income Tax Department, and termed the freezing of its accounts as “arbitrary and illegal”.
