This KitKat wrapper wants to stop doomscrolling by killing phone signal

New Delhi: KitKat has found a strange new way to push its “Take a Break” message: a wrapper that can block your mobile phone signal. The product is called Break Mode, and it was created by KitKat Panama with creative agency Ogilvy Colombia.

At first look, it appears like an oversized KitKat wrapper. The twist is that it works like a Faraday cage, which means your phone may lose signal once placed inside it. In a time when many people pick up their phone without even thinking, the idea feels funny, odd and a little too relatable.

KitKat wrapper that blocks phone signal

Break Mode is being positioned as a real-world version of KitKat’s long-running break slogan. The wrapper is not just for show. It is made to act like a pouch that cuts off electromagnetic signals, making the phone unusable while it sits inside.

A campaign video shared by Ogilvy on Instagram says, “In a world that never disconnects, how can a brand’s promise of a ‘break’ become a reality? You reinvent the packaging.”

Instead of asking people to keep the phone away, KitKat is trying to physically block the distraction. Very direct. Very dramatic. A bit like telling your phone, boss, sit outside for five minutes.

What is a Faraday cage?

A Faraday cage is a closed cover made from conductive material. It blocks electromagnetic fields from entering or leaving the space inside it.

These cages are commonly used in labs, data security setups and electrical protection systems. In this case, the same idea has been turned into a phone pouch. Put the phone inside, and the signal gets blocked.

Is this coming to stores?

For now, Break Mode looks like a campaign concept rather than a regular product. Gastón Potasz, chief creative officer of Ogilvy Andina, said the packaging’s commercial viability is “still under evaluation.”

That means there is no clear word yet on whether people will be able to buy it.
