The struggle to rescue the workers trapped in the tunnel of Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand continues. The American Auger drilling machine has been prepared to rescue the workers trapped in the tunnel for the last 12 days. Why has this machine been selected for the safe return of workers fighting for life and death inside the mountains? An auger drilling machine is a machine used to make holes in soil, concrete, or other hard materials. This machine is made of a long metal tube which is called auger. There is a sharp edge at the end of the auger which cuts soil or concrete.

Efforts are underway to prepare a safe route for the safe return of the workers present in the under construction tunnel. However, debris, iron garters and machines are creating obstacles in the path of the auger drilling machine. Horizontal for this purpose drilling machine is being used. Its 6 meter long and 900 mm diameter steel pipe is piercing the tunnel directly in front.

This is how a hole is made
Auger drilling machines have a screwdriver-like design to take out debris while drilling holes. This is its biggest feature because despite being within a small radius, debris keeps coming out and holes keep forming. This means that you do not need a very wide space for much digging. With this you can dig forward (horizontal) and downwards (vertical).

Auger drilling machine is used in many types of works, like-
- Drilling holes for pipelines or other engineering infrastructure.
- Making holes to plant trees.
- To make holes for laying wires or cables.
- Making holes in houses or buildings.
There are two types of auger drilling machines
Manual Auger Drilling Machine: This machine is operated by hand. It is less powerful and is used for making small holes.
Power Auger Drilling Machine: An engine is used to run this machine. This machine is more powerful and is used for making larger holes.
There should be special safety arrangements while using auger drilling machine. Wherever these are used, safety goggles and gloves should always be worn. Before starting the machine, check that the auger is set in the center of the hole. It is important to always be alert while operating it and keep the machine under control.
