The exercise of selection and training of IT-savvy police personnel deployed in police forces across the country for the Cyber Commando squad has started. In the first phase, 5000 cyber commandos will be selected and they will be fielded after necessary training. The formation of this squad was announced two months ago by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the first foundation day of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre.
Like ED and CBI, there will be no area limit for this commando squad too. Recently, the Union Home Ministry had sought names of qualified policemen deployed in all the states and the Central Police Force for this squad. In this sequence, the process of selection of police personnel has intensified in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan etc. According to the officers associated with this project, names of officers from constable to SP are being shortlisted.
Preference will be given to those with knowledge of IT and forensics.
The special qualification of the policemen joining this squad is their understanding of IT and forensics. However, the Home Ministry will put the final seal on these names. After this, these police personnel will be trained as Special Branch. According to officials, after training these policemen will be called cyber commandos. They will only look after cyber crime cases and will be able to conduct raids in any part of the country based on information received on the National Cyber Helpline telephone number 1930.

According to officials associated with this project, this squad will include not only policemen but also employees of banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom service providers, IT intermediaries. This squad will be immediately active on every cyber crime happening in any part of the country and will do their part to corner the criminals.
