When will Chaturmas start?
According to the Panchang, Chaturmas starts with Devshayani Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha. In the year 2026, the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi will be observed on 25th July, Saturday. From this day Lord Vishnu will go into Yoga Nidra and it will be considered as the beginning of Chaturmas. Chaturmas will end on Devuthani Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. This year Devuthani Ekadashi will fall on 20 November 2026. That means Chaturmas will last from 25th July to 20th November 2026.
25th July or 26th July, which date is correct?
This time there is some confusion among people regarding the date. According to religious tradition, Chaturmas is considered to begin from Devshayani Ekadashi. Since in the year 2026, the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi will be observed on 25th July, hence Chaturmas will be considered to start from this day.
Why do marriages and auspicious functions stop?
There is a religious belief that on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra for four months in Kshirsagar. During this period, Lord Shiva takes the responsibility of running the universe. Marriage, housewarming, tonsure and doing new auspicious works during the rest period of Lord Vishnu are not considered appropriate in the scriptures. For this reason, as soon as Chaturmas starts, the auspicious time for marriages ends and after Devuthani Ekadashi, the auspicious time for auspicious activities starts again.
Why is Chaturmas special according to astrology?
According to astrology, the position of many important planets also changes during Chaturmas. During this period, the planet Venus, the factor of happiness, marital life and prosperity, and the planet Jupiter, the factor of knowledge, religion and auspiciousness, remain in a combust state. Due to the influence of these planets, it is advised to abstain from marriage and other auspicious activities.

Although auspicious works are not done during this time, but from religious point of view this time is considered best for sadhana, worship and spiritual progress.
