The film is based on a real case
‘Paanch’ is based on the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murder case in Pune. Munawwar Shah, an accused in this incident, gave it the form of a book. The name of this book in Marathi language was ‘Yes, I am guilty’. The film is loosely based on this. KK Menon was in the lead role in this. Aditya Srivastava, Vijay Maurya and Tejaswini Kolhapure were also a part of the film.
Was the film going to be made with Manoj Bajpayee?
It is said that Anurag wanted to make it with Manoj Bajpayee. When things did not work out, the film went to KK Menon. Actually, Anurag had taken actors from Makarand Deshpande’s theater group ‘Ansh’ for this film. Anurag was also once a part of this theater group. Manoj was initially going to work in ‘Paanch’. Then films like ‘Satya’ and ‘Shool’ were released. Manoj Bajpayee became a star. Anurag Kashyap did not have enough money to give him. So he approached KK.

Manoj Bajpayee’s film ‘Shool’ was written by Anurag Kashyap. He had refused to direct it. Manoj wanted him to direct it, Manoj himself has told this at one place. The reason given for Anurag not directing ‘Shool’ is that he wanted to make his debut as a director with ‘Paanch’ only. This happened, but this film could never be released.
The film was rewritten because of this Hollywood picture
Anurag Kashyap initially wanted to keep the lead character of KK in ‘Paanch’ fictional. The film had been written. At the same time Brad Pitt’s ‘Fight Club’ came. There was already one such character in this. After this, Anurag did not want his film to be called copied. That’s why he rewrote the script of ‘Paanch’. I mean, the ‘Paanch’ that we saw now is something else, earlier its story was completely different.
Had set out to make a musical film, but it became a crime thriller.
Actually, around 1993, Anurag lived in St. Xavier’s hostel. Then he met a band named ‘Greek’, which later came to be known as ‘Pralaya’. Anurag made 40 pages of notes following the daily routine of these band members. Something like a script was written on it. Then its name was ‘Miraj’. However Anurag calls it ‘parasites’. Then he discovered the Joshi-Abhyankar case while working with Mira Nair. He incorporated this case into his story ‘Parasites’ and the film ‘Paanch’ was made.
Producer fooled KK and Anurag
Actually the ban on the film had been lifted. Anurag and KK were hopeful that the film would be released. After this they will get good work. KK felt that this film could make him a star. They can get good work. Producer Tutu Sharma told him not to sign any film now, we are going to release ‘Paanch’. He also felt that once the film was released, he would be able to do more good work. Tutu would put up hoardings of the film and say that now the film is about to be released. But this could never happen. It is said that there was some dispute between him and the distributors and the film got canned.
Anurag Kashyap became body double
KK did not know swimming. He also tried to learn, but could not learn at that time. It was very important to be able to swim for the film. What should be done now? Anurag used a trick. He knew how to swim. He was also thin at that time. That’s why KK and his height looked almost similar. That’s why KK would act like diving into water. The rest of the actual underwater swimming work was done by Anurag himself. In a way, Anurag Kashyap was KK’s body double in the film. KK also got injured during this film.
