Adi Vinayaka Temple: In Sanatam Dharma, while starting the puja, Lord Ganesha is remembered first. He is considered the remover of obstacles and a symbol of knowledge. We all have usually seen Ganapati in idols with a wide mouth and a long trunk, but at a holy place in the country, Lord Ganesha appeared to the devotees in a completely different form. His idol is in the form of a small child with a human face, due to which this temple gets a special identity, that is why devotees come here to visit with great devotion and it is known as “Adi Vinayak” or “Narmukh Bal Ganapati” temple.
Where is Narmukh Adi Vinayak Temple?
This rare temple is located in Thilatharpanpuri village near Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. The statue of Narmukh Adi Vinayak is installed in the Mukteshwar Swamy temple here. This temple is known as the only trunkless Ganpati idol in the world. Lord Ganapati is present in the form of Mukteshwar in this temple.
Why is Ganapati in human form here?
According to mythological beliefs, Lord Ganesha was in human form before getting the elephant’s head. According to local legend, his original form is present in this temple, that is why he is also called “Adi Vinayak”. In this temple, Lord Ganesha appears in the form of a small child, whose face is calm and gentle and has no trunk, which surprises the devotees.
How did Til Tarpan Puri get its name?
According to the Sthalapurana related to this place, it is said that Lord Rama performed philanthropy at many holy places to bring salvation to his father King Dasharatha, but his desired wish was not fulfilled. Then worshiped Lord Shiva. It is said that Shiva suggested him to offer tarpan with sesame seeds at this holy place. It is believed that Lord Rama took bath in the holy lake here and offered sesame seeds to his ancestors, due to which Dasharatha attained salvation. Due to the meaning of this place, its name was “Til + Tarpan + Puri”.
Famous for the salvation of ancestors?
Devotees believe that by offering offerings to ancestors at this place, ancestral defects are removed. It is said that people who have performed proper Shraddha rituals for their ancestors get auspicious results by offering tarpan here. This is the reason why thousands of devotees reach this place on occasions like Amavasya, Pitru Paksha.
Known as a holy place of salvation
Til Tarpan Puri is considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in South India. According to local traditions, the spiritual importance of this area is similar to other places famous for ancestor worship like Kashi, Gaya and Rameshwaram.

According to the belief of devotees, if someone sees and worships this Ganapati then his educational development and intelligence gets sharpened. Concentration and mental strength develop in students. Family fights end and peace is established. At the same time, obstacles are removed. It is believed that this also brings them wealth and good fortune.
special puja for chaturthi
In this temple, special anointments and prayers are performed on the day of ‘Sanktahara Chaturthi’ which comes after the full moon of every month. Local devotees believe that on that day Agastya Maharishi appears in miniature form and worships Adi Vinayak.
How to reach the temple?
Til Tarpan Puri village is situated near the famous pilgrimage sites of Tamil Nadu. It is about 3 km from Koothanoor Saraswathi Temple and about 25 km from Thirunallar Shani Lord Temple. It is easily accessible by road from Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai and Karaikkal.
