One Officer One Official Car Policy: The Central Government has taken a big and strict step to curb the wastage of government money and VIP culture. Now senior bureaucrats and government officials will not get more than one government vehicle. The Center has tightened the rules related to the use of government vehicles and implemented the policy of ‘One Officer, One Official Car’. With this new rule, the ‘fun’ of those officers has ended, who were using 2-2 or more government vehicles in the name of having additional charge of different departments.
What is the ‘One Officer, One Official Car’ rule?
An Office Memorandum (OM) issued by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has directed all central ministries and departments to strictly implement these new guidelines on the use of staff cars.
What are the contents of this new order?
Second vehicle will not be available at extra charge
If an officer is already allotted a Government Staff Car, he/she will not be allotted another car if he/she gets additional charge of any other Ministry, Department, Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) or Autonomous Body.
Will have to use only old car
Such officers will have to continue to use the same staff car already assigned to them for their parent post.
Strict surveillance on surplus vehicles
Ministries have been directed to ensure that vehicles which are left surplus or unused are kept in safe custody instead of being used for unofficial purposes.
Ban on use of vehicles of PSU and other departments
According to the new order, central government officials will no longer be able to make arbitrary use of vehicles belonging to PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings), autonomous bodies or semi-government organizations. Officers can use these vehicles only when they are on official duty or on an authorized tour.
Why did the government take this decision?
- Misuse of government vehicles will stop.
- The need to provide multiple vehicles to the same officer will be eliminated.
- Government expenditure will reduce.
- There will be better use of resources.
- Same rules will apply in all ministries.
- The government believes that this will improve the administrative system and save taxpayers’ money.
The old rule was made more strict
This new instruction is an extension of the Master Office Memorandum issued on September 1, 2022. At that time the Center had consolidated the rules on the use of staff cars in government offices. Now the government has again reiterated that all ministries and departments will have to follow these rules.
