The arbitrariness of the companies will not be tolerated, the government has fixed 9 standard sizes for edible oil.

The government has implemented a new rule regarding the sale of edible oil. Now oil manufacturing and importing companies will be able to sell their products only in prescribed standard pack sizes. The aim of this step is to protect customers from confusion and make it easier to compare prices of different brands.

According to Reuters report, under the new rule, edible oil can now be sold only in packs of 9 fixed standard sizes. The government believes that this will make it easier for customers to compare prices between different brands and companies will not be able to create confusion through pack sizes.

Oil will be available in 9 standard sizes

According to the new rules, the packaging of edible oil has been limited to 9 standard sizes ranging from 200 ml to 20 litres. At present, there are many different sizes of packs available in the market, due to which it becomes difficult for consumers to estimate the correct price.

Rules will apply to these oils

This rule will be applicable to all major edible oils produced in the country and imported from abroad. This includes products like palm oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, mustard oil and groundnut oil. The government has given three months time to the companies to implement the new rules. After this, all companies will have to sell products in the prescribed pack size only. Also, in the packets on which the quantity of oil is written, it will be mandatory to give information about its equivalent weight.

Small pack gets discount

The government has also ensured that smaller and cheaper packs are available to low-income consumers. Therefore, some packs with capacity less than 200 ml and some special category oils have been exempted from this rule. According to the Consumer Affairs Department, this decision has been taken after discussion with organizations related to the oil industry. The industry organizations that were interviewed represent about 90 percent of the companies in the edible oil sector of the country. The government believes that this step will increase transparency in the market, customers will get better options and the arbitrariness of companies will be stopped.
