New Delhi/Bhopal: There was an uproar in Indian politics when on Tuesday the nomination papers of senior Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan, who led the Congress for the Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh, was suddenly canceled by the Returning Officer. As soon as the news of rejection of nomination of Natarajan, who is considered very close to Rahul Gandhi and an expert in organizational strategy, came out, there was a stir in the political circles. After this, a new and very sharp political conflict has started between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
After all, what was that hidden secret? Why was the file cut?
There is a deep suspense and legal maneuver hidden behind this entire incident. In fact, BJP candidate Mahesh Kewat had lodged a serious objection to the nomination of Meenakshi Natarajan. According to Kevat’s lawyer Sanket Gupta, Natarajan had completely hidden details of an alleged case pending in Telangana in his election affidavit. BJP alleges that not giving this information is a direct violation of the strict guidelines of the Supreme Court, under which it is mandatory for the candidates to give details of every small and big criminal or pending cases. Based on this objection, the Returning Officer without wasting any time cleared the Congress candidate.

Show-cause notice or a well-planned conspiracy?
As soon as the nomination was cancelled, there was huge anger in the Congress camp. The party has presented a new claim completely rejecting BJP’s allegations. Congress says that the case over which such a big fuss has been created was not a serious criminal case but merely a simple ‘show-cause notice’. According to Congress, under the rules it was not necessary to mention any such notice in the affidavit. Top party leaders allege that this is not a legal lapse, but a well-planned political conspiracy by the BJP to deprive Congress of a seat in the Rajya Sabha.
Outcry from Delhi to Bhopal: Attack on Election Commission office
Immediately after this decision, senior Congress leaders took charge. The powerful trio like Sachin Pilot, Bhupesh Baghel, Jairam Ramesh and KC Venugopal went straight to the Election Commission office against this decision. Who is Meenakshi Natarajan who changed the strategy behind the scenes?
Meenakshi Natarajan, born on 24 May 1973, is not an ordinary leader. He is among the few faces of Congress who are considered part of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Young Brigade’ and core team. She started with student politics (NSUI) and was its national president from 1999 to 2002. His real political stature grew in 2008 when Rahul Gandhi appointed him the Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). After this, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he created history by winning the Mandsaur seat, which is considered a stronghold of BJP. However, in 2014 and 2019 he had to face defeat from Sudhir Gupta. In February 2025, he was made Telangana in-charge of Congress.
