Elon Musk’s company is preparing to launch a new and bigger variant of its best-selling SUV in India next week. The name of this new car is ‘Model YL’, which will be a 6-seater, long-wheelbase SUV.
This new model of Tesla will be made in Shanghai Gigafactory of China and will be sent to India from there. Currently, this is the only factory in the world where the Model YL is manufactured. Currently, Tesla cars sold in India are also imported from there. Making cars in India has been a difficult task for Tesla, because there is a heavy tax of 70 to 110 percent on cars imported here.

If we look at the figures, Tesla’s journey in India so far has been a bit slow. According to government data, Tesla registered only 227 cars in 2025. Due to low demand, the company had to give a discount of up to Rs 2 lakh to clear the stock. Initially the company had set a target of selling 2,500 cars every year. Now the company hopes that this large 6-seater model will attract Indian families.
This is the price in China
Tesla is also facing tough competition in the global market. In 2025, Chinese company BYD had won the title of the world’s largest electric car manufacturing company. For this reason, Tesla is now trying to increase its sales with small changes and new features. The price of model YL in China starts from around Rs 40 lakh. However, after the imposition of tax in India, its price will increase significantly.
