New Delhi: Tata Motors has added the Altroz hatchback’s CNG trim with a 5-speed AMT option at a starting price of Rs 8.69 lakh. With this, the Altroz is now the only premium hatchback in India coming with a CNG AMT powertrain. The Altroz CNG is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine, like the petrol trim but with a factory-fitted twin-cylinder kit.
For the petrol mode, the output goes up to 88 hp and 115 Nm of torque. The 5-speed AMT is also the same unit that is available with the petrol Altroz trim. As opposed to the 345-litre boot space of the Altroz’s petrol and diesel trims, the CNG version does come with a lower 210-litre luggage capacity.
With the Toyota Glanza and Maruti Baleno pulling down the CNG to lower, less-equipped trim levels, Tata is strikingly offering the CNG AMT powertrain right up to the one below the highest-trim Altroz Accomplished S trim, which comes with features like LED headlights and tail-lamps, a sunroof, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 7-inch driver’s display, a wireless charging pad, ambient lighting, 16-inch alloy wheels and the lot.
I have driven the Altroz CNG-powered and diesel trims, though with a manual gearbox and personally speaking, I liked the diesel version, which comes with a peppy 1.5-litre Revotorq Turbocharged engine. The driving dynamics were neat, and the overall manoeuvrability of the car was good as well. The feature list is sufficient, and even though in terms of plastic quality and soft touches, there could be improvement, the Altroz does make for a fun to drive in the city hatchback.
Altroz also happens to be the only hatchback in India coming with a diesel powertrain, and that does give it an edge.
