Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [भारत]July 13 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay on Monday condoled the demise of renowned Tamil writer and Sahitya Akademi Award winner Poomani and announced that state honors will be given during his funeral.

In a post on “The news of the demise of Sahitya Akademi Award winning author and an important creator in the Tamil literary field, Thiru Pooliyarai Manickavasagam, known as Poomani in the literary world, is very sad,” Vijay said.

CM Vijay remembered Poomani’s contribution

Paying tribute to the renowned writer, the Chief Minister said Poomani’s works, which are rooted in the lives of common people and the history of the dry land areas of Tamil Nadu, have made a lasting contribution to Tamil literature. He said, “His works, which were filled with the earthy aroma of the dry land, the subtle realities of the lives of common people and the deep evidence of history, established him as an important composer.”

Vijay also recalled that Poomani had received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel ‘Annaati’ and mentioned that the acclaimed film ‘Asuran’, based on his novel ‘Vekkai’, took his literary works to a wider audience. He said, “Receiving the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel ‘Annaati’ is the highest recognition of his literary stature. Additionally, the film ‘Asuran’ based on his novel ‘Vekkai’ exposed the reach of his writing to the world.”

Funeral will be held with state honors

Describing Poomani’s death as an “irreparable loss” to the Tamil literary world, Vijay expressed his condolences to the writer’s family, relatives, friends and members of the literary community.

Announcing state honors for the last journey of the late writer, the Chief Minister said, “In recognition of Thiru Poomani’s contribution to the field of literature, his last journey will be accorded state honours.” (ANI)
