Iran US Talks Islamabad: Iranian MP Mahmoud Nabavian described US-Iran nuclear talks in Islamabad as a “strategic mistake”. Talks mediated by Pakistan ended without any result; America’s harsh demands and distrust increased the tension. Status of talks and ceasefire uncertain.
Iranian MP Statement Mahmud Nabavian: The recent indirect talks between Iran and America in Islamabad, Pakistan are once again in the headlines. Iranian Parliament member Mahmoud Nabavian has given a sharp statement calling this conversation a “strategic mistake”. He says that it was a big mistake of Iran to bring a sensitive issue like nuclear program to the negotiating table, which gave the opposing countries an opportunity to adopt a more aggressive stance. This statement of Nabavian has come at a time when the talks between Iran and America a few weeks ago ended without any concrete result.
“The talks on nuclear issue were a mistake” – Iranian MP
Quoting an interview given on SNN TV, Nabavian said that including the nuclear program in the talks held in Pakistan was a serious strategic mistake. He claimed that Iran should not have discussed such a sensitive topic. According to him, “By doing this the enemies gained confidence and they took a more tough stance.” He also said that despite the goodwill shown by Iran, the US has failed to build trust.

Why did Islamabad talks fail?
Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, also commented on the failure of the talks, saying that the US failed to win Iran’s confidence. He says that decades-old tension and sanctions have created deep mistrust between the two countries. Iran alleges that US demands were too harsh, especially regarding nuclear enrichment and long-term sanctions, which led to talks failing to reach a conclusion.

Pakistan’s mediation and rising questions
Pakistan played the role of mediator in this talks and provided a platform for talks to both the parties in Islamabad. However, questions have been raised over Pakistan’s neutrality as it maintains complex diplomatic relations with both the US and Iran. Experts believe that this complexity proved to be a major obstacle in the success of the talks.

Increasing tension in diplomatic environment and uncertainty of ceasefire
Amidst this development, regional tension has further increased. The status of the already announced temporary ceasefire is also not clear. Different statements are coming out from the American side, due to which the situation seems to be becoming more complicated. Former US President Donald Trump took a tough stance in a recent statement and said that only those terms will be accepted in any agreement which are beneficial for America and its allies.

What will happen next – diplomacy or confrontation?
This latest dispute between Iran and America once again points to the fact that the gap of trust between the two countries is still deep. While Iran is calling the talks a “step in the wrong direction”, the US appears to be adamant on its terms. At present, the prospects for a diplomatic solution remain uncertain and global eyes are now on the next developments.
