Kolkata (West Bengal) [भारत]July 24 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday paid tribute to late Bengali actor Uttam Kumar by unveiling his statue on his death anniversary.
The statue was unveiled by CM Suvendu Adhikari in the presence of actress Rituparna Ghosh, ministers and Uttam Kumar’s family members. After this he also went to the actor’s residence in Bhawanipur.
A musical performance was also given by the artists to remember the contribution of Uttam Kumar to Bengali cinema.
Announcement to celebrate the birth centenary of Uttam Kumar
CM Suvendu Adhikari also announced that the birth centenary of Bengali actor Uttam Kumar will be celebrated from September 3 to September 6 this year. This will include many programs and other events.
On this occasion, West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta remembered Uttam Kumar and described him as an “institution” of Bengali cinema. He expressed his support for the birth centenary celebrations of Uttam Kumar.
Speaking to the media, Swapan Dasgupta said, “Uttam Kumar was not just an actor; he was an institution. His popularity is unmatched till date. That’s why there is a special place for him in the heart of everyone who watches Bengali cinema. This year will mark 100 years of his birth anniversary. A special program should be organized for this.”
Actress Rituparna Ghosh described the actor’s birth centenary celebrations as a moment of “proud” for Bengali cinema. Rituparna Ghosh said, “I think it is absolutely extraordinary and unprecedented that our CM has taken such steps in the memory of megastar Uttam Kumar. It is a matter of pride for us.”
CM Suvendu Adhikari also visited the actor’s Bhawanipur residence, where photographs and other honors of Uttam Kumar were kept.
Who was ‘Mahanayaka’ Uttam Kumar?
Uttam Kumar was an Indian film actor who worked predominantly in Bengali cinema and was the most popular film star of Bengali cinema. He was popularly known as “Mahanayak”.
Apart from Bengali, Uttam Kumar also acted in some Hindi films like “Chhoti Si Mulaqat”, “Amanush”, “Anand Ashram”, “Dooriyaan”, “Bandi” and “Kitab”.
The actor is known for films like Nayak, Saptapadi, Antony Firangi, Agni Pariksha, Harano Sur and others.
Uttam Kumar was the recipient of several awards in his lifetime, including the Indian National Film Award for Best Actor. This great artist breathed his last on 24 July 1980 in Kolkata at the age of 53. (ANI)
