Kolkata: CBI will now investigate the murder of Chandranath Rath, personal assistant (PA) of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. After taking over the case from West Bengal Police, CBI has formed a team of 7 members for investigation. DIG Pankaj Singh will lead this team. The special thing is that the Bengal Police itself had recommended a CBI investigation.
The murder of 41-year-old Chandranath Rath took place just days after the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were declared. This incident took place in Madhyamgram of North 24 Parganas district at around 10:30 pm on 6th May. The attackers who came on bike stopped Chandranath’s car in the middle of the road. Chandranath was sitting in the front seat and the attackers fired about 10 rounds at him and immediately fled.
Chandranath died on the spot in this attack, while his driver Buddhadeb Bera was seriously injured. Now his condition is improving. The statement of an eyewitness is very important in this case. He told that the attackers had stopped the car at Dohariya Junction and opened fire. On Monday morning, the special team of Bengal Police arrested three suspects related to this case from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Mayank Raj Mishra and Vicky Maurya have been arrested from Bihar, while Raj Singh has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh.
It is believed that Raj Singh is the sharp shooter who opened fire. After interrogation, all three were arrested. He was brought to Kolkata and presented in the court, from where he has been sent to police custody till May 24. A UPI payment and CCTV footage at the toll plaza of Nivedita Setu in Kolkata helped the police reach these three. After this the police came to the conclusion that the killers had come from outside Bengal. Police estimate that at least 8 people may have been involved in the conspiracy and execution of this murder.
