In Kamaruddin Nagar, where more than 56% electricity theft was taking place, theft of more than 1 crore units was stopped in a single raid. Annual loss of Rs 24.4 crore due to electricity theft in Kamaruddin Nagar
In Kamaruddin Nagar in Mundka division of West Delhi, the power loss had reached 56.4 percent, which is really a matter of concern. Due to this large-scale electricity theft, there was a loss of about Rs 24.4 crore every year. The thieves here were mainly illegal commercial and industrial units, who were drawing electricity from overhead wires.
Raids campaign to stop electricity theft, more than 1 crore units of electricity saved
To deal with this problem, Power Minister Ashish Sood directed the power companies (discoms) and enforcement agencies to take strict action. A major raid was conducted under this campaign. With just this one action, electricity theft of more than 1 crore units (kWh) has been prevented. Its effect was visible immediately and on a large scale. In the places where action was taken, theft of electricity has now reduced by about 34,000 units every day.
Delhi government will install anti-theft armored cable, electricity network will be safe
To ensure that this advantage is maintained, the government has ordered complete replacement of old and unsafe power cables with secure, anti-theft armored cables. After the success in Kamaruddin Nagar, the Delhi government is now taking similar action in other hard-hit areas of the city. Authorities are deploying additional police forces for secret raids and using advanced data analytics to detect and take action against electricity theft in other divisions.
AAP government accused of failing to stop electricity theft
It is also said that this rampant theft of electricity flourished during the previous AAP government, which failed to take any concrete steps despite repeated warnings. By ignoring these illegal commercial activities, the previous administration allowed huge financial losses year after year, which burdened the government exchequer. This administrative failure was a betrayal of the honest taxpayers of Delhi. On one hand, law abiding consumers were paying their electricity bills honestly, while on the other hand, large-scale electricity theft was allowed to go on unhindered.
Assurance of providing 24×7 electricity to honest consumers, strict action will be taken against those who steal
Delhi Government has reiterated its commitment to provide reliable, affordable and 24×7 uninterrupted power supply to honest consumers. Electricity Minister Ashish Sood has warned that the connections of illegal commercial institutions involved in electricity theft will be immediately disconnected, heavy fines will be imposed on them and their properties will also be sealed.
