SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali universe is expanding with a new two-part anime film titled Baahubali: The Eternal War. The announcement teaser has already created a strong buzz among fans, especially because it explores what happens to Amarendra Baahubali after death.
What is Baahubali: The Eternal War?
Director Ishaan Shukla revealed that the idea began during his festival travels in 2024, when he met Baahubali producer Shobu Yarlagadda. After discussing his interest in adapting the world of Baahubali in animated form, he developed a story and pitched the concept of Amarendra Baahubali’s journey after death. Shobu liked the idea and later took it to Rajamouli, which led to the project moving forward.
Why was anime chosen?
Ishaan said he is a big fan of Amar Chitra Katha and felt that anime was the right medium for a story that moves beyond Earth into another realm. He explained that Indian scriptures also speak about different worlds and that a spiritual, otherworldly journey suited animation perfectly. The film is meant to take Baahubali’s story into a larger mythic universe.
What is the story about?
The film focuses on Amarendra Baahubali’s soul after death and his search for a greater purpose through the Devasura Sangram. Ishaan described Baahubali as a deeply pure and almost Lord Rama-like figure, whose unfinished journey continues in the afterlife. The story aims to explore his thoughts, choices, and destiny beyond the events of the live-action films.
Why is the tragedy so deep?
According to Ishaan, one of the greatest tragedies in Amarendra Baahubali’s life is that he never learns why Kattappa killed him. That unanswered question is central to the emotional power of the character. He also noted that many ancient Indian stories feature heroes who die just before becoming kings, never knowing what their future could have been.
When will it be released?
Pre-production on Baahubali: The Eternal War has already been completed, but the animation process will take time. Ishaan is currently aiming to release the first part in 2027.
