There was a time when she used to design clothes for actresses like Sushmita Sen and Sridevi, and today she has become a major contender for the top positions of power in Bengal as a powerful leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
After her landslide victory in the May 2026 assembly elections, she was considered a ‘dark horse’ in the race for the chief ministerial post, but media reports have made it clear that she will be made the deputy chief minister. Left medical studies and chose the path of fashion
Born on 25 November 1974 in Asansol, West Bengal, Agnimitra Paul came from a family where education and medicine were prominent. His father Dr. Ashok Roy is a renowned pediatrician. Agnimitra completed her early education from Loreto Convent, Asansol and did her Masters in Botany from Jadavpur University. Her family’s dream was that she should become a doctor like her father, for which she took admission in a medical college in Bangalore, but she returned within a week. She then did a Diploma in Fashion Technology from Birla Institute of Liberal Arts and Management Sciences (BILAMS) and an MBA from TDB College, and from there she pursued her true passion as a career.
Flag hoisted in fashion industry
In the year 2001, he started his fashion label named ‘INGA’ which became famous in many major cities of India. His first big break in Bollywood came from veteran actress Sridevi, when he designed the actress’s personal wardrobe and costumes for Esha Deol in the film ‘Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe’. He designed amazing outfits for many celebrities like Sushmita Sen, Mithun Chakraborty, Kay Kay Menon and Sonali Kulkarni. Even when former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited India, she was gifted shawls and blankets designed by Agnimitra.
Entry into politics and growing stature in BJP
In the year 2019, Agnimitra Paul took a different direction from her glamorous career and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. His stature as a leader grew rapidly in the party. In 2020, she was made the President of West Bengal BJP Mahila Morcha, where she conducted self-defense training workshops for women from 23 districts under the name ‘Uma’. In view of her leadership skills, she was appointed State General Secretary of the party in December 2021 and on January 7, 2026, she became the Vice President of Bengal BJP.
Election struggle and big victory of 2026
His journey in electoral politics has been quite challenging. For the first time in the 2021 assembly elections, he defeated TMC’s Sayoni Ghosh from Asansol South seat. However, he faced defeat in the 2022 Lok Sabha by-elections (against Shatrughan Sinha) and 2024 Lok Sabha elections (against June Maliya from Medinipur). But in the West Bengal Assembly elections of May 2026, he made a strong comeback and proved his political strength by defeating TMC’s Tapas Banerjee from Asansol South seat by a huge margin of 40,839 votes.
Leadership race, controversy and outspoken thoughts
After BJP’s historic victory (206 seats) in the 2026 elections, Agnimitra Paul’s name was prominently discussed for the top leadership of Bengal. According to media reports, in view of the huge turnout of women in the elections, the party high command was seriously considering the strategy of handing over the command of the state to a woman leader, which makes her claim even stronger. However, according to his election affidavit, he has 23 criminal cases registered against him. His supporters clearly say that none of these cases is a serious crime, rather all these cases are related to political protests and movements which are considered common in Bengal politics.
Agnimitra Paul is known for her outspokenness and development-oriented thinking. He openly believes that the people of Bengal go beyond the politics of ‘Temple-Mosque’ and want employment, permanent houses, clean water, roads, colleges and better health facilities for themselves. She often says that the basis of winning elections should not be religious issues, but basic development and jobs.
Agnimitra Paul’s journey from being the first working woman from a conservative business family (her husband Partho Paul is an industrialist), to pursuing her dreams and now to the pinnacle of power in Bengal, is a strong example of women empowerment.
