Actress Soni Razdan has spoken about how her approach to silence has evolved over the years, saying she is increasingly interested in exploring the spaces between lines rather than simply delivering dialogue.
Razdan, who is gearing up for the release of the psychological thriller Shaque: Trust No One, discussed her relationship with silence during the show’s promotions in Mumbai, where she appeared alongside co-stars Tahir Raj Bhasin and Parineeti Chopra.
Razdan said actors can sometimes feel uncomfortable with silence because they are accustomed to being given lines that they are expected to deliver.
“I actually feel I would like to use silences a lot more,” she said, adding that she is learning to find the spaces between lines and explore the layers that emerge in those moments.
She recalled that actors earlier had to deliver lengthy stretches of dialogue to communicate emotions and complete a scene. However, she said she now feels more freedom to stay with moments of silence and discover what they can convey.
“I’m discovering the silences between the words. And I am being allowed to do that as an actor for the work that I am doing and it is interesting,” Razdan said.
Shaque: Trust No One revolves around trust, suspicion and betrayal. The story follows a mother who has spent nine years searching for her missing child. Although she receives photographs of the child every year, she remains desperate to uncover the truth. Her search eventually leads her to suspect that the mystery surrounding the abduction may be connected to people within her closest circle.
The series is directed by Rensil D’Silva and created by D’Silva and Siddharth P. Malhotra. It also stars Jennifer Winget, Anup Soni, Harleen Sethi and Sumeet Vyas.
Shaque: Trust No One is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 24.
