New Delhi [भारत]July 22 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Center over its handling of the protests in the national capital and said everyone is witnessing the “death of democracy” here.
On Congress leaders wearing black clothes in the Parliament complex, Shashi Tharoor told reporters that if an important issue like paper leak cannot be raised in Parliament, then there will be politics. He said, “This (wearing black) is a protest and a mourning because we are witnessing the death of democracy. Look, the reality is that politics has come into this. Obviously, politics also comes into this. But the real issue is the sentiments of the students; they are the future of the country. If they are feeling cheated and disappointed, there should be some opportunity to reach out to them. I am really surprised that the government allowed matters to get so out of hand and welcomed the students with violence and sticks. This is really Was a bad idea.”
Tharoor met injured students
Tharoor said he met some of the students injured in the police action and was deeply saddened by it. He said, “A young man who was giving water to the protesters was beaten with sticks below his eyes, on his head. A young girl talked about being mistreated by male policemen. And these are very painful things. Many of them saw some people in plain clothes who had sticks in their hands which had nails or screws stuck in them. It was quite shocking for them too.”
Questions raised on closure of metro station
He also questioned the government on closing 16 metro stations for some time due to security reasons. He said, “Who is threatening the metro? I don’t understand the logic of shutting down the city. They are creating an environment which doesn’t need to be created. I don’t understand what the problem is.”
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced temporary closure of 16 metro stations to maintain safety while ensuring that train changing options remain accessible at major nodes.
According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the stations that have been closed till further orders include Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Supreme Court, Seva Tirtha, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium.
