Recalling NSD days, Pankaj Kapoor revealed that 10-year-old Shahrukh Khan used to deliver samosas to the artistes, as his father ran the NSD canteen.
Bollywood’s king Shahrukh Khan may be counted among the biggest superstars of the world today, but an interesting incident related to his life is in the news these days. Veteran actor Pankaj Kapoor, while sharing memories of his student days at the National School of Drama (NSD), said that there was a time when 10-year-old Shahrukh Khan used to deliver samosas to theater artistes. The reason for this was that his father used to run the canteen of NSD. Pankaj Kapoor also told how during the theater days, actors used to save the naan available on stage and enjoy it with samosas and tea during the interval.
Memories of NSD refreshed after 50 years
Recently, Pankaj Kapoor told on Kindle Cast’s YouTube channel that it has been 50 years since he completed his studies from National School of Drama. He shared memories of the early days of theatre, reliving the experience of working with renowned theater artist Ibrahim Alkazi. Pankaj Kapoor told that at that time Ibrahim Alkazi was directing three big plays ‘Razia Sultan’, ‘Tughlaq’ and ‘Andha Yug’ simultaneously in Delhi’s Purana Qila. Being first year students, Pankaj and his colleagues got small roles in ‘Razia Sultan’. In one scene, he had to play the role of a starving civilian, while his two companions played the role of soldiers.

Samosa party started with Naan
In one scene of the play, soldiers had to throw bread into the crowd. Pankaj Kapoor and his friends started using it in a unique way. He said, “We had formed a team of friends. They would throw naan at us, we would catch them and during the interval we would buy samosas and take them backstage. Then we would enjoy naan, samosa and tea.” However, Ibrahim Alkazi later found out about the ruse and scolded the students for making changes in the staging.
