Sawan Month & 16 Monday Fast: The month of Saavan is considered very sacred in Sanatan Dharma. This month has been dedicated to Mahadev, the god of gods. Sawan is considered to be the fifth month of Hindi calendar. In this month nature covers us with a blanket of greenery. This is the most sacred time of faith and devotion. The special importance of worshiping Lord Shiva in Saavan is described in the scriptures. In this month, Jalabhishek is especially performed for Lord Shiva. There is a mythological belief that Mahadev drank the poison that came out of the churning of the ocean in the month of Saavan.
After drinking the poison, the heat in Mahadev’s body started increasing. Then in this month, the gods had offered water to Mahadev to provide coolness to his body, since then the tradition of offering water to Mahadev in the month of Sawan started. According to Drik Panchang, this year the month of Saavan will start on 30th July and this month will end with Saavan Purnima on 28th August. The month of Sawan is considered to be the most auspicious time to take the resolution of fasting on 16 Mondays. If you want to take a resolution to fast for 16 Mondays, then take it on 30th July, the first Monday of Sawan this year. From this day you can keep fast for 16 Mondays.
Why is this fast considered special?
Starting the fast on 16 Mondays in Saavan brings worldly pleasures. At the same time spiritual purification takes place. The sins of previous births are destroyed and mental-spiritual peace is achieved. It is believed that by observing fast for 16 Mondays, all the wishes are fulfilled. With the effect of this fast one gets the desired life partner. Love remains in married life.
