Rajkumar Santoshi was Sanjay Dutt’s first choice for ‘Khalnayak Returns’
According to the report of Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay Dutt wanted Rajkumar Santoshi to direct ‘Khalnayak Returns’. It is believed that Sanjay felt that Santoshi could handle big commercial cinema brilliantly. The report quoted sources as saying, “Sanjay Dutt wanted Rajkumar Santoshi to direct this film. He felt that Raj ji had a deep understanding of commercial cinema and would be able to do justice to this big project.”
Sanjay Dutt was planning to work with Rajukar Santoshi for the first time.
The report also claimed that Sanjay Dutt wanted to work with Rajkumar Santoshi for the first time through this film. The report further quoted sources as saying, “Both are very talented people and have never worked together. Sanjay Dutt felt that a special project like ‘Khalnayak Returns’ would be perfect for their first partnership. That is why he himself went and offered the film to Santoshi.” However, Rajkumar Santoshi respectfully rejected this offer. According to reports, she is currently busy giving the final touch to Sunny Deol starrer ‘Lahore 1947’.
The report reads, “Rajkumar Santoshi is currently busy with ‘Lahore 1947’. Apart from this, he has also written some new scripts, which he wants to narrate to Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan. That is why he told Sanjay Dutt that he does not have time to direct ‘Khalnayak Returns’.”

Even though Santoshi could not be a part of the film, he praised Sanjay Dutt’s new avatar in the teaser. Quoting sources, the report reads, “Rajkumar Santoshi was very impressed by Sanjay Dutt’s offer. He wished all the best for the film and also praised Sanjay Dutt’s look and swag in the teaser.”

There are clear indications from the teaser that in ‘Khalnayak Returns’ the audience will get to see a more dangerous and older ‘Ballu Balram’ than before. Sanjay Dutt’s new style seems to be showing the story of anger, revenge and survival. After the teaser was released, it was believed that the film’s original ‘Khalnayak’ director Subhash Ghai would direct it. But he made it clear that he is not taking the responsibility of directing it. ‘Khalnayak’, released in 1993, featured Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in the lead roles. The film became a cult classic due to its powerful dialogues, music and Sanjay Dutt’s character.
