Comedian Samay Raina is once again embroiled in legal disputes. The Supreme Court has imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on him during the hearing of the case related to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The court says that Samay Raina did not follow the instructions given earlier by the court and tried to mislead the court regarding compliance. The Supreme Court has directed them to deposit the fine amount within two weeks.

Why did the court impose a fine of Rs 3 lakh?

During the hearing, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant said that based on the record, there is enough reason to believe that Samay Raina willfully violated the court orders. The court also said that a compliance affidavit was claimed to have been filed, whereas no such affidavit existed on record.

Considering this conduct as serious, the Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh and ordered the deposit of the amount within two weeks. Besides, time has also been given to file the compliance affidavit within 15 days.

What was said in the hearing?

During the hearing, senior advocate Aparajita Singh said that despite the court’s instructions, Samay Raina neither contacted the SMA Foundation nor the people suffering from this disease. Commenting, he said that considering such a person as a youth icon is a matter of concern. At the same time, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that Samay Raina has recently started a new show. He said that no one’s name was taken in the show, but no concrete steps have been taken so far to follow the court’s instructions.

Supreme Court warns, strict action may be taken further

The court made it clear that it is the responsibility of each party to abide by the assurances given before the court. The court said that if the compliance affidavit was not filed within the stipulated time, further strict action would be considered. At present, Raina will have to deposit a fine of Rs 3 lakh within two weeks. Along with this, compliance affidavit will also have to be filed following the instructions of the court.
