Salman Khan’s Selfless Reason Behind Singing Main Hoon Hero Tera – ‘He Took The Bullet Himself,’ Recalls Amaal Mallik

More than a decade after Hero released, composer Amaal Mallik has revealed the real reason why Salman Khan decided to record his own version of Main Hoon Hero Tera. While the song was originally sung by Armaan Malik and had already become a chartbuster, Salman stepped into the recording studio shortly before the film’s release for a reason that just shows how lovely he is as a human being. According to Amaal, the superstar wanted to shield debutants Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty from the negativity surrounding the film by shifting public attention onto himself.

Speaking to Mashable India, Amaal recalled that the original version of Main Hoon Hero Tera, sung by his brother Armaan Malik, had already become a massive success after it was released alongside the film’s trailer. However, as Hero neared its theatrical release, the film found itself surrounded by controversy and negative publicity. Salman Khan, who had produced the film with Subhash Ghai while introducing Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty to Bollywood, decided to personally step in.

According to Amaal, Salman believed the focus should move away from the newcomers and onto himself.

Recalling the conversation, Amaal said Salman told him, “I should do something to take the negativity away and put the focus on me, not Sooraj and Athiya.” He added that the actor has always been someone who stands by people during difficult times.

The composer described Salman’s decision as an act of protection for the debutants. “He took the bullet himself,” Amaal said, explaining that   suggested recording the end-credit version of the song since he was introducing the two actors and wanted audiences to associate the attention with him instead.

How Salman-Amaal recorded Main Hoon Hero Tera

Amaal revealed that Salman never approached the recording with the confidence of a professional singer. Instead, he repeatedly reminded the composer that he trusted his judgment. According to  , Salman would often tell him, “I’m not a singer. You decide.” Despite his hesitation, the superstar ultimately chose to go ahead with the recording, a decision Amaal believes proved to be the right one.

The composer also shared interesting details about how the song was recorded. He explained that Salman possesses a naturally husky voice with a distinctive baritone, and he wanted to preserve that texture instead of making it sound polished or artificial. To achieve the desired effect, Amaal positioned the microphone nearly six feet away and used heavy reverb to create a larger-than-life echo.

Rather than asking Salman to sing the entire song at once, Amaal adopted a simple recording process. He first sang each line himself before asking Salman to repeat it, allowing the actor to comfortably match the melody while retaining his natural vocal style. Looking back, Amaal believes the final result remains unmatched.

He said that although Salman has sung several songs since then, the unique sound achieved for Main Hoon Hero Tera has never been recreated.
